HARTFORD, Conn. (Jan. 13, 2025) — A bill requiring the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs to acquire land for a veterans cemetery has been proposed for the 2025 session.

House proposed bill No. 5177, “An Act Concerning the Department of Veterans Affairs and a Connecticut Veterans Cemetery,” was introduced by Rep. Christie Carpino (R-32) and referred to the joint committee on Veterans’ and Military Affairs on Jan. 13, 2025.

Rep. Carpino’s district includes Cromwell and Portland, which is located across the Connecticut river from the current Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. Additionally Rep. Aundré Bumgardner (D-41st) representing Groton and Stonington is a co-sponsor.

The bill directs the “Department of Veterans Affairs shall, not later than July 1, 2026, designate one or more parcels of land already under the custody and control of said department, or newly acquire one or more parcels of land, as an appropriate final resting place for deceased Connecticut veterans.”
